UAE Launches Geographical Indications System to Protect Local Products
The UAE Ministry of Economy has launched the country’s first federal Geographical Indications (GI) system to protect and promote national products linked to specific regions.
The initiative supports intellectual property rights, enhances global competitiveness, and preserves cultural heritage.
Four products received GI tags in the first phase: Hatta honey, Ras Al Khaimah ceramics, Al Dhafra Dabbas dates, and traditional palm frond crafts. More products are under review, and full online registration is now open.
The GI system aligns with the UAE’s economic diversification goals and global IP standards, offering legal protection under the updated Trademarks Law and supporting SMEs, traditional industries, and sustainable development.
