Egypt – Statement by the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority
In light of recent incidents in Egypt concerning violations of intellectual property rights, whether through attributing artistic works to individuals other than their rightful creators, or through the use of artificial intelligence technologies in producing creative content without due regard for the rights of others, the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority (EGIPA) affirms its close monitoring of these matters and the legal, cultural, and societal consequences that follow.
EGIPA emphasizes that one of the main reasons behind the recurrence of such violations is the lack of sufficient public awareness of the importance of intellectual property, its role in safeguarding creativity and protecting creators, as well as in strengthening trust within the cultural and artistic innovation and investment environment.
Building on the National Intellectual Property Strategy, launched by His Excellency the President of the Republic as the first integrated strategy in this field, EGIPA underscores the following:
- EGIPA had already initiated a nationwide awareness campaign on intellectual property rights. Pilot steps have been undertaken through organizing lectures and awareness seminars at Cairo University, Ain Shams University, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and a number of other cultural and educational institutions. Preparations are currently underway to launch this campaign on a broader national scale.
- EGIPA has developed specialized committees to review the laws and legislations related to intellectual property, particularly in connection with the use of artificial intelligence, taking into consideration coordination with relevant stakeholders. This is aimed at updating and developing the legislative framework in a manner that balances the protection of creators’ rights with safeguarding freedom of expression and fostering innovation.
