UAE Introduces New Music Licensing Framework for Commercial Use of Copyrighted Music
Businesses operating in the UAE that use copyrighted music commercially should take note of an important development in the country’s copyright and collective rights management framework.
From 1 December 2026, annual music licensing fees are expected to apply to businesses using copyrighted music in commercial settings, including restaurants, cafés, hotels, shopping malls, gyms, airlines and other establishments. Fees will vary depending on factors such as the nature and size of the business and the manner in which music is used, with live music and DJ performances generally attracting different licensing considerations.
In other words, the background playlist may soon need a little more attention than simply choosing who gets control of the Spotify account. 🎶
The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism has authorized Emirates Music Rights Association (EMRA) and Music Nation as collective management organizations responsible for licensing uses of music and administering royalties on behalf of right holders.
The development represents an important step in strengthening the UAE’s framework for the protection and commercial exploitation of copyright and related rights, while providing a structured mechanism through which creators and other right holders may receive remuneration for the commercial use of their works.
For businesses, the practical takeaway is simple: if music forms part of the customer experience, copyright compliance should now form part of the checklist too. Apparently, even the playlist has a legal department now 😃
Businesses should therefore review their current music-use arrangements and assess the applicable licensing requirements ahead of implementation.
