    Iraqi Trademark Office Discontinues Local Subclassification with Adoption of 11th Nice Classification

    The Iraqi Trademark Office (TMO) has announced the discontinuation of its local subclassification system, including the alphabetical numbering of class headings, following the adoption of the 11th edition of the Nice Classification on January 19, 2025.

    Under the updated guidelines, applicants are required to specify the exact serial number that corresponds to the pre-approved goods or services in the 11th edition of the Nice Classification. The use of class headings is no longer allowed, and custom specifications will no longer be accepted.

    For renewals and recorders, applicants must submit a reclassification request to transition from the previous 7th edition to the new 11th edition.

    This revision represents a significant overhaul of Iraq’s trademark registration system, bringing it into closer alignment with international classification norms.
