Saudi Arabia – SAIP Issues Implementing Regulations for Geographical Indications
Saudi Arabia has advanced its geographical indications (GI) framework with the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) approving the Implementing Regulations of the Geographical Indications Protection System pursuant to Board Resolution No. 2026/39/01 dated 30 April 2026, following the issuance of the system under Royal Decree No. M/102 dated 17 November 2025.
According to the Official Gazette (Umm Al-Qura), SAIP will begin receiving GI applications once the system and regulations enter into force, while examination procedures will commence after publication of the official fees.
The regulations establish the requirements for registration and protection of geographical indications and aim to safeguard products whose quality, reputation, or characteristics are linked to a specific geographic origin. They also prohibit registration of generic or misleading product names.
This development supports Saudi Arabia’s continued efforts to strengthen its intellectual property framework and promote protection of locally connected products and industries.
