Libyan Trademark Office – Update on Trademark Renewal Practice
The Libyan Trademark Office has introduced a change in practice regarding trademark renewals. All renewal applications will now be accepted for a period of ten (10) years only. It is no longer possible to select a specific number of years for renewal, as was previously permitted.
This approach is consistent with Article 1257, which states:
“The protection period of a registered trademark shall be ten years, renewable for an identical period ……”
The official government renewal fee remains USD 20,000 per trademark per class.
For trademarks where renewal applications have already been filed for one year or for multiple years, applicants are required to submit additional renewal applications to cover the remaining period in order to complete the full ten-year renewal term.
