Saudi Arabia Introduces Tahaqaq Platform for Trademark Customs Recordal
The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP), in cooperation with the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA), has introduced the Tahaqaq platform, a new digital system for recording trademarks with Saudi customs authorities.
This development represents an important shift in customs trademark enforcement in Saudi Arabia, moving from traditional notification-based procedures to a more structured digital recordal system. Through the platform, trademark owners may record their registered trademarks, per class, to enable customs authorities to identify and verify suspected counterfeit goods at Saudi ports of entry.
The platform is expected to improve communication between customs authorities, trademark owners, and their authorized representatives by allowing the electronic exchange of shipment information, product images, and supporting documents. This will assist trademark owners in reviewing suspected shipments and providing timely assessments on whether the goods are genuine or infringing.
Although registration on the platform is currently voluntary, it is strongly recommended for trademark owners seeking effective customs protection in Saudi Arabia. Failure to record trademarks may limit the ability to receive timely customs notifications and respond promptly to suspected counterfeit shipments.
Given the legal and technical nature of the recordal process, trademark owners are encouraged to complete and manage their registrations through their authorized legal representatives. This ensures that the trademark portfolio is properly recorded, monitored, and maintained in accordance with the applicable procedures.
Trademark owners with registered marks in Saudi Arabia should consider taking early steps to record their trademarks on the Tahaqaq platform and strengthen their border enforcement strategy.
