Saudi Arabia Expands Global Intellectual Property Engagement Through WIPO Accession
Saudi Arabia has taken another significant step toward advancing its intellectual property framework by officially joining two key international WIPO agreements: the Riyadh Design Law Treaty and the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks.
The accession instruments were formally submitted during the WIPO Assemblies in Geneva, with participation from representatives of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, including CEO Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Swailem, alongside Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulmohsen Binkhothaila.
This milestone reflects the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to modernize its IP landscape, improve access to global protection mechanisms, and support innovators, businesses, and rights holders. Through these international frameworks, Saudi Arabia is enabling more efficient protection of trademarks and industrial designs while reinforcing its position as a competitive and innovation-driven economy.
For businesses and brand owners, this development represents an important opportunity to review and strengthen their intellectual property strategies. As Saudi Arabia continues to align its IP framework with international standards, rights holders can expect a more integrated and efficient system for protecting trademarks and industrial designs.
