Morocco and WIPO Sign Agreement to Boost Intellectual Property Protection and Promote Cultural Heritage
Geneva, July 2025 — During Morocco’s participation in the WIPO General Assemblies (July 8–17), Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mr. Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid, signed a memorandum of understanding with WIPO Director General, Mr. Daren Tang.
The agreement aims to enhance bilateral cooperation in intellectual property (IP), with a focus on copyright, related rights, and the legal protection of Morocco’s intangible cultural heritage. It also enables Morocco to benefit from WIPO’s legal and technical expertise, including the use of the WIPOCONNECT system and the implementation of emerging rights such as resale and reproduction rights.
A key element of the agreement is the international promotion of “Label Maroc”, a cultural certification that safeguards heritage elements like the caftan and zellige, managed by the Moroccan Industrial and Commercial Property Office (OMPIC).
The partnership also strengthens the role of the Moroccan Copyright Office (BMDA) through training, expert exchanges, and institutional support, helping to improve copyright governance and ensure fair protection for Moroccan creators.
Minister Bensaid emphasized that the agreement reflects Morocco’s commitment to defending its cultural heritage through legal channels, especially in the context of technological advancements such as artificial intelligence. He also noted that Morocco is working with WIPO to register seven additional intangible heritage elements for international protection.
