Oman – Omani Frankincense Achieves Global Geographical Indication Status
Frankincense produced in Oman has secured worldwide protection as a geographical indication (GI) through the framework of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), marking a historic milestone as the first Gulf-origin product to gain registration under the Lisbon System.
This international designation officially acknowledges the strong connection between Omani frankincense and the region where it is cultivated and harvested. It also highlights the product’s unique characteristics, heritage, and established reputation in global markets. The achievement comes after Oman joined the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement, an international treaty designed to facilitate cross-border recognition and safeguarding of geographical indications and appellations of origin.
The newly obtained status is anticipated to enhance the global visibility and commercial value of Omani frankincense, while providing stronger legal mechanisms to prevent unauthorized use of its name in foreign markets. The development also reflects Oman’s broader strategy of utilizing intellectual property tools to preserve, protect, and promote products that represent the country’s cultural and economic identity.
