Saudi Arabia Joins the Hague System for Industrial Design Protection
The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) has announced that Saudi Arabia has officially joined the Hague International Design Agreement, one of the key intellectual property treaties administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
This agreement is designed to support creative designers by promoting and marketing their work, offering protection both regionally and internationally. Saudi Arabia’s accession highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering creativity and innovation, which in turn strengthens its national economy.
As the largest economy in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia’s membership underscores its dedication to innovation and the protection of designers’ rights, paving the way for broader adoption of the Hague Agreement in the region.
Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al-Suwailem, CEO of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, emphasized that the Kingdom’s accession will simplify the process of protecting designs by enabling owners to register their work in any member state of the agreement. This will allow designers to market and sell their creations with greater ease, ensuring effective protection and management in multiple countries.
Saudi Arabia deposited its instrument of accession, and the agreement will take effect on April 7, 2025, making the Kingdom the 99th country to join the Hague Agreement. Notably, Saudi Arabia became a member of WIPO in 1982.
